Sun City, in the northwestern area of metro Phoenix in unincorporated Maricopa County (Wikipedia profile), was launched by developer Del Webb in January of 1960. Due to it's incredible popularity over the years with seniors, more retirement communities like it were born to accommodate the ever increasing active adult 55+ population that are moving here to take advantage of the wonderful winter climate and year round desert lifestyle and activities.
Additional Del Webb/Pulte communities, Sun City West was built in the late 1970s. Sun City Grand came out in the late 1990s while Sun City Festival premiered in July of 2006. Another Sun City community opened in 1999 in the southeast valley at Sun City Anthem at Merrill Ranch Florence.
Arizona Traditions (built by Continental Homes/DR Horton) is an active adult gated community located just west of Grand Avenue on Bell Rd in Surprise, AZ. The first homes there were built in 1997.
